DESCRIPTION

I've created two vintage-style veggie heads, complete with tambourine and cello. The two pumpkin characters have hand-scultped heads and painted cotton batting bodies. Vintage crepe paper adorns their collar and they wear a tiny gold dresden buckle. They are celebrating October 31 in the cemetary, among the pumpkins, fallen leaves, tall grass and a smiling crescent moon. "Spanish moss" drips from the curly willow branch behind them. The tombstones are made from sculpey and the pumpkins are paper mache. A tiny red lantern sits on the wood base to the right of the piece. Measures 13" wide, 7" deep and 7" tall.

Best of all it lights up!!

Celebrate 365: My Kind of Magazine!

I am so pleased to be in the Fall 2011 double issue of Celebrate 365 magazine. It's a wonderful publication coming out four times a year, and it offers collectors a bevy of holiday art created by talented artisans. To order the magazine or subscribe, click here. My work appears on three pages:

My curious eye ornament was featured. I've had so many fans say that these ornaments are delectably creepy, because the eye follows you around the room. It's perfect for your Halloween tree and I have one left in my etsy shop here.

In addition, one of my Halloween recycled collages made the pages of the magazine. "The Witching Hour" is made from recycled construction lumber and a page from an old National Geographic - yes, the page makes up the background. The wood makes the perfect substrate for these two gothic looking witchlings and adds weight to the piece. The witches collage has sold, but I do have one similar for all you Edgar Allen Poe fans! It too is in my etsy shop here.

The third page of my art appears in the Late Summer portion of the double issue. Turn the magazine over and you'll find summer art, including a captain's shell box I created. You can read more about that on my mixed media blog: My Birdsong.

Wicked Witch Greetings

The month of Halloween is almost here and I've created a doosie of a paper mache witch to greet all your Halloween trick or treaters, family and friends! The whimsical witch Pannah the Deplorable is a little more than three feet tall and holds a leaf-strewn banner with the letters, "Halloween" hung from it. You can replace the banner with one of your own, for her fingers are shaped to hold something. She's currently on eBay, so take a peek. If you live locally near Danville, CA, I'd be glad to waive the shipping fee and you can pick her up!

I've listed several of my latest Halloween prints on eBay, and they include some mysterious black cats and a jack-o-lantern or two. Later this week, I'll be listing several new Christmas pieces in my etsy shop. It's been a busy past two weeks with two wonderful shows I participated in.

The Fourth Annual Tinsel and Treasures Art Show on Sept. 10 was again a fantastic event with so many wonderful artists and collectors coming out to shop! A big thanks to everyone who made the annual art event a great success! This includes my mother who helped me greatly! Of course, I couldn't organize the event without my talented friend and doll artist Colleen Moody, who hosted a sumptuous dinner for all the artists the night before the show. Head to her blog for great photos of some of the items that were snapped up that day by eager collectors. Thank you both Mom and Colleen!

Then two weeks later, I was off to Halloween and Vine, a spectacular all Halloween art show held in the bucolic town of Petaluma, CA each year. So many gifted artists celebrating October 31! It was great visiting with many artist friends and meeting so many fans! I have a few Halloween pieces left, like these whimsical black cat shakers. They will be listed on Etsy too.

Halloween Art Cards Make Originals Affordable

I have not painted many Halloween artist trading cards in a while and thought it was time. Artist trading cards (ATC), or as eBay calls them art cards, editions and originals (ACEO), are tiny works of art created on a standard size of 2-1/2" by 3-1/2" sheet. They were originally intended for artists to trade works of art with each other, and they were never to be sold. But they caught on with the masses, because they make original works of art affordable for everyone. I have painted many of these in past years and began moving toward larger paintings. But in this economy, I figured it was time to offer an original work for the same cost as one of my prints.

I've listed this original Halloween watercolor on eBay and you will find my auction here. Look for other Halloween ACEOs on eBay by some of my fellow Eclectic Halloween Artists Guild members by using the search term, "EHAG." Who lives in Black Cat Cottage?

A lonely cottage in the woods is home to three black cats and who? It's Halloween and the moon is full, as a witch flies across the October sky followed so many bats. This is an original 5x8" watercolor mounted on black matboard now available on eBay.

More watercolors are to come as I prepare for Tinsel and Treasures, Saturday, Sept. 10, and my newest show Halloween and Vine, Saturday, Sept. 24! Ain't No Bones About It

Summer is in full swing, although you wouldn't know it by our daytime temperatures. With a high of 75 to 80 degrees just outside San Francisco, I'm enjoying the cool summer breezes while I dream of fall. My Halloween watercolors are in full swing, while I list a few on eBay. The one pictured is more illustrative and whimsical than my usual, but I was in a JOL-ly mood when I painted it! ;0) It's listed on eBay now, and you can click here to head on over.

I've also started on some large paper mache pumpkins, witches and ghosts. Getting back to the medium is so enjoyable, especially when I can work outdoors. I hope you are enjoying the weather where you are and the creative spirit is with you!

Cat-ching Up

I seem to be spending my days more and more on Facebook, releasing images of new paintings and the latest works in progress. Thus, so much time as elapsed since my last post, and my need to cat-ch up! ;) I do apologize. I do still plan on maintaining my blog, so never fear if you're not a Facebook devotee! Now on to my art!

I seem to be drawn to black cats these days, as I prepare for Halloween. Yes, the summer solstice is not even a week old and I'm dreaming of fall. But as you know, I'm in the mood for Halloween all year long!

I am starting my Halloween, watercolor auctions on eBay again. The above original painting, "October Eyes," will be listed on eBay tonight, so watch my eBay auctions.

I recently sold this ACEO, "Night Flight." I am using graphite more in my work and love the dreamy affect it casts. I will be listing more of these tiny works of art, so I hope you pop in to my eBay auctions weekly, or simply add me to your favorite sellers list. Halloween is not too far off!

Getting "Familiar"

My fellow members of the Eclectic Halloween Artists Group and I participate in art challenges every month or so. The theme for this month is Familiar Friends. So what better familiar than a black cat! I painted this one as a 5"x7" watercolor, now on eBay. But check out the other offerings from EHAG members, on eBay and on etsy. You'll find links to all of them on the EHAG blog, EHAGart.blogspot.com.

Here's a little history about familiars. In European folklore familiar spirits, sometimes referred to simply as familiars, were supernatural entities that were believed to assist witches and cunning folk in their practice of magic. According to the records of the time, they would appear in numerous guises, often as an animal, but also at times as a human or humanoid figure, and were described as "clearly defined, three-dimensional… forms, vivid with colour and animated with movement and sound" by those alleging to have come into contact with them, unlike later descriptions of ghosts with their "smoky, undefined form[s]".

When they served witches, they were often thought to be malevolent, while when working for cunning-folk they were often thought of as benevolent, although there was some ambiguity in both cases. The former were often categorised as being demons, while the latter were more commonly thought of and described as being fairies. The main purpose of familiars is to serve the witch/young witch. The service the familiar would provide would be to protect the new witch coming into his/her new powers.

A Visit from The Ghost Bride

As I continue to learn about different mediums, I try to incorporate them into my work. Graphite is a wonderful mark making tool, and I don't mean just a graphite pencil. The powder variety is excellent for making images and illustrations. The Ghost Bride is an original illustration primarily created with such powder and pencils. I added a touch of pastel and colored pencil here and there and like the effect. This is now available on eBay, if you'd like to read more about it. Try something new and you never know what kind of magic may happen!

Vintage-Style Witching Hour Doll Appearing on EHAG Emporium

"Witching Hour"

It's the end of the month which means it's time for Halloween mischief on the EHAG Emporium blog! On the last day of the month, the Emporium unveils new Halloween art offered for sale by EHAG members. (In case you didn't know, EHAG is an acronym for the Eclectic Halloween Artists Group comprised of some of the most talented Halloween artists around!)

My submission for the February EHAG Emporium is the "Witching Hour," a vintage-style witch tucked neatly inside a paper mache witch's shoe. She has a China doll head and is wearing a shimmery dark bronze dress with millinery netting over her skirt. She is firmly secured inside a paper mache shoe, which I hand pressed from my vintage chocolate mold. The whimsical piece is embellished with Dresden, black glass glitter, gold bullion, vintage crepe paper and the image of an old clock face. Measures about 8" tall.

A Glowing Halloween

I'm working on adding texture to my watercolors, or at least the image of texture. "A Glowing Halloween," was born from this experimentation. The 5"x7" watercolor will be listed on eBay tonight. The image was one of many photographs I took last Halloween and I can't wait to paint my way through them! I'm always in the mood for a glowing jack-o-lantern! How about you?

Painting with Sepia and Cad Orange - A Work in Progress

I continue to play with my watercolors and other water media, experimenting with different techniques and tools. I painted this and see gnomes, woodland faeries and other creatures. As I see these mysterious beings, I am enhancing them slightly, so they can't hide from us quite as readily. It's still a work in progress. What do you see?

This Witch Brings Good Tidings at Halloween

New art is available tonight at 9 pm EDT on the EHAG Emporium, but I'm providing an early bird preview of my contribution. She is an adorable vintage-style witch, available for $75, plus $5 shipping (CA residents will be charged sales tax).

She wishes all a "Happy Halloween," with her arms loaded with October 31 treasures! She holds her broom, a hand sculpted pumpkin, a mini skeleton sprinkled with silver glass glitter and a Man in the Moon gold Dresden wand. Her head is vintage China from Germany and she stands atop a glass base. Her spidery cotton skirt is covered in tulle and her bodice is made of vintage black crepe paper trimmed with gold dresden. She wears a hand sewn felt hat adorned with vintage seam binding and a star. A small "Happy Halloween" sign adorns the glass base. The piece stands a litte over 10" tall, was handmade by me, comes signed and is one of a kind!

Halloween Doodles

In between projects, I like to doodle. I was experimenting with pen and ink and colored pencils on hot press watercolor paper. Just a fun little piece I wanted to share. Still working on my studio clean up and hopefully photos will be in order soon. Happy haunted weekend!

A New Year Means Time for Reflection

"Halloween Haunts"

The start of a new year means time to reflect on my art. You may notice that I often paint a pre-teen girl and a younger boy. You see, unconsciously I am painting our two children, during a time long ago. It is a time I cherish most of all, when the world was still innocent and our family was still complete.

The new year also brings the birthday of our departed 17-year-old daughter Brianna. January 12 ushers in wonderful memories and much sadness. The fact that she is now gone is as fresh today as it was three and a half years ago when she died.

So I keep painting scenes in which innocence abounds, and the world on Halloween is full of wonder and not too scary. My idealized world helps me cope with our loss. Some of you have told me my paintings help you escape to a gentler time and place too.

So as I think about my art moving into 2011, I've realized it has been a source of joy for me during the darkest time in my life. And it continues to elevate me to a better state of mind each time I put pencil and paint brush to paper.

Her torso is a wooden picture frame that I've embellished, textured and given a golden hue. Attached are her legs, arms and head, all moveable.

Halloween Smiles

I'm busy decking the house, inside and out, for my favorite holiday! It always makes me smile when I break out the decorations! I take special pride too when people walking past tell me they always love my Halloween yard display.

So still smiling, I managed to complete another original Halloween-inspired watercolor. It tells you how I feel at this time of year! It's painted on 140 lb. waterolor postcard and bears all the necessary postcard markings on back...except postage! What better way to say Happy Halloween to someone than to send an original painting! I have finished it with a special spray coating for protection. It's available now on eBay and ends Friday, Oct. 22.

My Watercolors Featured in Celebrate365 magazine!

I am so proud to be in the Halloween issue of Celebrate 365, a journal for the ornament enthusiast. There are many other Halloween artists featured too, as you can see from this two-page spread of the quarterly publication. The magazine also offer artist interviews and many photos of ornaments and October 31 inspired art. Another large watercolor of mine also was featured, in addition to my Victorian Paper Doll Witch wall decor. Publisher Connie Porcher does a great job finding the best in the industry and I'm humbled to be a part of it.

After a long summer of cool temperatures, we're getting a bit of Indian summer here. The thermometer has reached close to 100 degrees for the past two days and we have another hot one in store today. But thankfully, I know it won't last. You can see signs of the approaching fall. The leaves are starting to change and flutter to the ground. It inspires me so much to try and capture that feeling of cooler temperatures and brilliant colors in my watercolors. The painting above is now listed on eBay and ends tonight. It makes me smile knowing that fall is on it's way!

Time is Running Out Before Halloween

The Third Annual Tinsel and Treasures Folk Art Show in Alamo, CA, has come and gone! So many talented artists and eager shoppers in one place, all for just one day. It was so nice to say hello and visit with supportive collectors. But time is running out to see me again before Halloween! The little witch shoe, pictured above, was one of the treats shoppers were greeted with at my table display. She flew home with shoppers, as did all the pieces pictured here. But more art is coming!

The Finished Work

As promised, I completed the 9"x12" Halloween watercolor I showed in my previous post. Compare the "before" in my last post to the finished painting here. I've added layer upon layer of detail. I just love getting lost in these! I've listed it on eBay, and will be selling prints soon! Let me know if you are interested!

Also, I'm so excited to be featured in two of Stampington & Company's magazines this month. I wrote an article, "Away to Halloween Town," which featured my Halloween Hot Air Balloon for the Sept/Oct. 2010 Vintage Halloween issue of Somerset Studio. That issue also included a Haunted Masquerade beeswax collage I created.

Next, two of my projects were featured in Somerset Holidays & Celebrations 2010. My whimsical hot air balloon Christmas ornaments graced the pages of the magazine, as did my Halloween Witch's Shoe project. I am thrilled with both!

A Work in Progress - Painting Halloween

I am painting several more 9x12 watercolors, and I thought it would be fun for you to see some of my works in progress. Here's my latest I hope to finish today and will most likely list in my Etsy shop by tomorrow. Once complete, I'll post the finished piece and you can see how I've added more texture, deeper colors and a few more characters. I hope to video a painting so you can watch me from start to finish! The Black Cats Have It!

I miss having a black cat. Long ago, as a young adult we had a black cat named Sasha. She was a handful, all wirey and spry. But I loved her yellow eyes, sleek body and fun-loving nature. Now years later, we have a German Shepherd and at nine years old, he isn't too keen on sharing the household. One day we will have another black cat. I guess that is why they keep finding their way into my paintings - wishful thinking!! This little ACEO has three feline hopefuls for me. One day....*sigh*! Moonstruck for a Spooky House

I am really getting into the fall mindset, with the season's bright orange, yellows, reds and browns, the rustle of leaves and the smell of a fire - despite our 100+ degree weather this week! The full moon last night was spectacular. I sat in front of the window sill and stared at the glowing orb hanging in the night's sky, just marveling at its beauty. It gave me more momentum to finish this original watercolor postcard, "The Spooky House." It will be listed tonight in my eBay auctions. Hope your last weeks of summer are pleasant! Happy Haunting!

What: A Kid's Halloween Art Contest
Who: Children ages 10-14
When: Now thru August 31st, 2010. The winner will be announced by September 7, 2010
Where: Online at the EHAG Facebook Page and EHAG Blog
How: Parents email an image of your little ghoul's Halloween themed artwork to ehaagartists@hotmail.com along with the young artist's name, age, date, contact info, title of piece and medium used.
Prize: $100 gift certificate for art supplies from the winner's art supply store of choice.

Be as creative as possible and all artwork must be completed solely by the young artist. We ask that no gore be depicted. Artwork will be judged based on originality and use of medium, and all mediums will be accepted. (All EHAG family members are excluded from participation.)

The members of the Eclectic Halloween Artist Group (EHAG) are obviously not the first generation to create Halloween art, and we certainly will not be the last. So, we decided to sponsor a kid's art contest that both celebrates our most favorite holiday and nurtures their creative spirit! And as we know, there must be children out there who love to create Halloween art as much as we do! So why not encourage them today!

Beware of Odd Encounters in the Woods

As you may know from my last post, I met a tree gnome and actually snapped his picture. What I didn't tell you was the old witch we met during our meanderings in the forest. She was a bit creepy and invited us in for tea. Thankfully, my husband and I had to get back to our visitors, so we couldn't accept her invitation. I don't know if her disappointed expression was because she was lonely or because she had something unfavorable in mind! You'll find her art-card-sized watercolor portrait on eBay, here. Homecoming and Graduation

For the past few weeks, we've been focused on our son's high school graduation. Not only was there the ceremony, but a senior picnic, senior photos, senior barbecue and grad night, in which directly following the ceremony the students were whisked off to a USS destroyer docked in Oakland and outfitted with all sorts of games and activities. The night culminated in the 200+ recent grads hopping onto a boat and crusing the San Francisco bay with more music, games and lots of food and espresso. They didn't get home until 6:15 am the next day!

While our son was off having a good time, we had family and friends staying with us. So we took a day trip to Muir Woods in Marin County. If you've never gone, it is one of the few remaining places in the world where giant redwoods still tower above the land.

Some reach as high as 260 feet and are as old as 1,000 years! They are magnificent sentries near the coast and are among the oldest living things on earth. We even spotted a few deer that came down from the hills to feast on the lush carpet of greenery.

And...I even found a tree gnome!

Do you see his profile? He is looking to the left of the screen, with his button nose and big chin! I just knew the forest there was enchanted!!

With all the entertaining, sightseeing and celebrating, I managed to finish a watercolor "Halloween Homecoming," and post it as a "Buy It Now" listing on eBay.

A Window to Your Soul

...at least that's what they say of our eyes. I've created a few more of these handmade ornaments with black glass glitter and a vintage image of an eye that follows you around the room. A bit creepy? Yes. And there is something about these little gothic pieces that makes me feel as if someone truly IS watching. Because they are made by hand, each is unique in its own way. We Can All Use a Bit of Halloween

Wow...Glitterfest was here and gone in a flash! But I used my little Flip camera to share a bit of the experience with you. And even though it was Glitterfest spring, I brought some Halloween to share with the shoppers. As many of you love October 31 as I do, it comes as no surprise that I sold many pieces celebrating All Hallow's Eve, in addition to my mermaid inspired art.

I hope to have a few more pieces up on eBay in the next week. "Hope" is the key word. Our son is graduating from high school next week and lots of family and friends will be staying with us. Soon, our son will be heading off to LSU for college. I am so happy for him, with a merit scholarship to boot. But of course, I will miss him so! Life is full of change, and we can only hope for the best.

Every so often I imagine that fall is here. It is my favorite time of year. If the breeze is cool enough and the sun is low in the sky, it's no longer turning in to summer. Instead...the seasons are moving directly into fall! I take advantage of those special moments, when you smell wood burning and hear leaves rustling, to work on Halloween pieces. Glitterfest Fun with Paper and Fabric

I love mixing paper and fabric to come up with original folk art for Halloween. My Victorian paper doll witch is the perfect example! Her skirt is filled with tulle to make it full and then I've used vintage-style millinery netting over it. Don't you think it gives it the perfect gothic feel? And she is a favorite image of mine from my collection of Victorian scrap books. This spooky gal is about 17" tall, and has a unconventional glass glitter witches hat. Curiousity Did Not Kill the Cat

We've been having many rainy, cold days during the past couple of months, so I've been staying indoors and experimenting with some new mediums. Block printing has always intrigued me, so I decided to give it a try. I did a bit of research and found some wonderful tutorials on YouTube. The most helpful was one by Milliande. She provides information about the materials to use, ways in which she uses the prints and carvings, and more. Here's part one of her seven-part series.

So off I ventured to Micheal's with my 50% off coupon in hand. I purchased a little kit that included a easy carve block, some ink and a carving tool with two blades.

Since I have painted many watercolors, I figured I could use one of those designs. However, for my first one, I thought I'd better keep it simple. I sketched something out and transfered the drawing onto the block. Remember, it's in reverse! Here's what I ended up with.

And then the printed version.

Of course, I had to add some watercolors! But I plan on carving more of these and have all sorts of ideas of how to use them. It was so much fun just experimenting with these! If you have the time and need a break, give something new a try.

I just love this fine lady's expression. She knows something we don't know, perhaps because she sees it in her crystal ball? Is that a gentleman wearing a top hat, swirling in the ball's mist? A Soul Full of Halloween

Even though there are more than seven months until Halloween, I somehow find it all year long. The smell of wood burning in the crisp air, the sun low in the sky casting an orange glow on all it touches and drinking spiced cider on a brisk moonlight night reminds me of fall's splendor - even though spring is almost here! These help to inspire me to create Halloween art all year long. My acrylic paints have found their way onto my palette and a young witch sprang to life on the canvas. I love trying new techniques, and the early part of the year is when I experiment. "Magic is in the Air," is a mixed media painting that will be featured in my SpookyTimeJingles.com Halloween shop. It has lots of texture with swirls, peaks and valleys, some collage work and full of vibrant color, all completed on wood board. Remember, it releases on Jan. 13. A Time for Everything

I created several of these Halloween themed aprons and kept one for myself. I have worn it many times over the last several weeks and may even don the simple, but colorful apparel during the big feast! As we all know, the holidays can be a time best described by the words across my apron's waistband, "Spooky, Trick or Treat, Beware." But for the most part, they are a time of gratitude and giving.

Celebrations Abound

It's been several weeks of celebrations, including our son's 18th birthday in mid October, a Halloween party with friends at our home the day before Halloween, and then my birthday this past Saturday. Can you tell what we dressed as for Halloween? It's hard to make out my costume, but I made it from a Martha Stewart project some years ago. I was a raven, complete with iridescent black coque feathers around my neck, wrists and on my bustle, and my hubby was Indianna Jones, with a whip and all! It's been a whirlwind of fun!

And amidst all the festivities, I'm working on Christmas and a few Halloween pieces. I'll have some new offerings on SpookyTimeJingles.com, which updates on the 13th. Or, you can visit me at Pfattmarketplace.com for sweet holiday ornaments and everyday gift items. Of course, my Etsy shop will be filling up as we get closer to the holidays, and still has a few Halloween goodies!

October Magic

It's been a magical week in October around the Wilcox household. We began with an indoor skydiving adventure on Sunday, that has convinced me there is no need to put myself in danger by actually jumping out of a plane! My husband and I and our son and one of his friends all donned our jump suits, helmets and ear plugs and individually dove into the iFly wind tunnel in Union City, CA. Of course, we had a little help from a flight instructor who was by our side positioning our hands and legs and giving us hand signals as we floated in the 60+ mph winds that kept us afloat. It was exhilirating, so say the least!! I loved it and am ready for more!

On Monday and Tuesday, I had the wonderful privilege of taking classes from Michael DeMeng. What a genuinely nice guy and such a talent! We created some "Demented Toys," on Monday that were truly eclectic. I created a serpent-like mermaid using a vintage China head and a Barbi torso. Yes, it is quite a sight. I've got more work to do on it, but I learned so much.

Tuesday, Micheal took us through the process of creating framed images with layers and layers of color. He is a real genius when it comes to Golden paints and the sublte nuances each adds when mixed. He gave us the recipe for painting creepy babies, serial killer red, vertigre and gothic black. My cup runneth over with Halloween ideas.

However, that wasn't the best part of Tuesday. It was also our son's 18th birthday. I can't believe my sweet little shy boy has become a man and we couldn't be more proud. I made his favorite breakfast, dinner and dessert, and later this week, we will head out to a steak house on Friday for more celebrating. Of course, just beneath the surface are my thoughts of our daughter who never reached the age of 18. Each celebration is bittersweet knowing that one of us is no longer here. I felt her spirit as my husband and I sang happy birthday to our beaming son, and I feel her presence as I sit in the backyard and watch fall's splendor around us.

A Haunting We Will Go

My first and only haunted house of the season. The windows have broken "glass" and the illusion of tiny panes. I've placed little gausian curtains, all tattered and torn in a few of the windows. The inside is a deep orange, and the very neat thing about this piece is that it lights up! When plugged in, the inside of the house glows orange. There is a large window on the side extension of the house too. The darkened dresden trim really gives it a gothic feel.

New Offerings and Spooky Fun in Orange County, CA

After this little pretty sat in my studio for some months, I decided to change her up. She's a 5x7" Halloween mixed media collage that I created on artist canvas board and then given a nice coating of 100 percent natural beeswax. It smells lovely! That's the beauty of beeswax - you can move things around if you don't like them. She was sitting on a frightened cat, but it just didn't seem to work. So I heated up the wax, pulled off the image, and changed it out for the grinning pumpkin. Wa - la... she has a new look!

If you haven't tried beeswax, you can give it a whirl this Saturday in Walnut Creek, CA, where I'll be teaching the morning session during Mistresses of Macabre Part I - a day of art with two 3-hour workshops, catered lunch, goodie bag and more! Teaching Trip Day One - Roger and Over the Moon

This past weekend Colleen Moody and I headed to Gilding the Lily in Fullerton, California, to teach two workshops each over a two-day period. We left plenty of time though to visit some amazing places including Roger's Garden in Costa Del Mar and Paris to the Moon in Costa Mesa.

Oh my goodness!! My heart went pitter pat when we first arrived at Roger's Garden. I love nurseries, since I consider myself a gardener - at least of containers right now. The entrance was beautiful with fall colors and pumpkins every where. Little did I know what delights were inside the many buildings!

Being a lover of everything Halloween, our first stop had to be the Holiday Shop at the Garden. We were told they have the best Christmas displays, but they were still working on them and wouldn't be ready for another two weeks. I did peek in and see all sorts of glittered trees and ornaments. It will be a spectacle when done!

So in we walk to the Holiday Shop, which has been dubbed the basement of Mad Madeline's Manor. The banner above said it all about the look! There were many themed rooms that just took my breath away. They cleverly tucked their products amongst the amazing displays. As they say, pictures are worth a thousand words, so here are just a few of the many I took.

The talking dummy, who informed us that it had "been a long time, been a long time" (in his quirky dummy voice) since he was on stage.

The walls and ceilings were dripping with old, "dusty" chains, cobwebs and everything you might find in an old basement, including furry rats, huge spiders and a mean ol' cat.

Okay, I want to know who had been collecting these wheels? I mean what a grand idea!!

Painting these dolls all white gave them the best ghostly affect. Oh Chucky...where are you?

Bird cages will always seem somehow different after this display. This was a huge cage, about 6 ft tall! How would you like that spider in your house? Or better yet....

this one clinging to your ceiling?? This is a shot looking up. Can you say "Creepy?"

The lighting throughout the display was phenomenal! The mad scientist was still at work!

I have never really like clowns. But after this photo collection, I like them even less! One of those pictured had fangs!! Yikes!

If have a chance to see Roger's Garden, I highly recommend it. Not only did they have a wondrous Halloween extravaganza, they also had a huge selection of seasonal plants, gift items and more! We spent over an hour wandering the property, soaking in all the eye candy, and of course, picking up a purchase or two along the way.

Next on our day of stops was Paris to the Moon. What a delightful little shop, nestled in Costa Mesa.

Although I didn' t get any photos inside, I can tell you that it is full of the neatest kitschy findings, sweet wedding and baby gift items and gift makings, odd doll parts for your Halloween displays, lots of Edward Gorey books (which I wish I would have gotten!!) and a large array of fun art and this and that to make your own. They also have a great selection of FG&Co cards, tags and calendars. It was just too much fun!

When we asked about a suggestion for lunch, without hesitation the shop keeper handed us a menu from Taste Buds. It was bar none the best salad I've ever tasted! Grilled vegetables topped with grilled chicken and a vinagrette that still makes my mouth water when I think of it. We added an order of pomme frites with truffle oil and our morning was perfect!

What a Show!!

We were all dressed up and ready for the show. And what a show it was!! The Second Annual Tinsel and Treasures Art Show in Alamo, CA was filled with all sorts of treasures from the 15 artists who participated.

Shoppers lined up outside waiting for the magic to begin. The doors opened and the air was filled with excitement.

Beautiful displays of art were unveiled, and it couldn't have been more fun! See all the pictures on the Tinsel and Treasures blog. I can't wait for next year!

No rest for the weary though! It's high season for Halloween!! Watch for my upcoming blog sale, Sunday, October 4, beginning at 6 pm PDT. A Toast with HalloVine!

I was given an art opportunity that both thrilled and scared me. I'm sure you've all experienced these moments. Of course, I immediately said "Yes!" Later, I thought how in the heck I was going to accomplish it?

I was asked to create the 2009 HalloVine wine label art for the Napa Valley winery Madonna Estate. So taking some inspiration from Bacchus, I grabbed my paint brushes and my watercolors and worked. I actually painted two finished peices, very similar to each other. The originals, both available for purchase, are 8"x11" and will soon be listed in my Etsy shop.

A Little HalloVine History
I am the fifth in the series of notable Halloween artists to create a one-of-a-kind collectible HalloVine label. The label idea was created for the love of Halloween and in celebration of the most "spirited" day of the year, Halloween. This year's vintage is a 2006 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Each year the actual wine is different, and each year a new artist is selected to illustrate the label. HalloVine is the perfect wine to sip on a chilly fall evening waiting by the fire for Halloween.

The winery owners admit that this is the most colorful label that has been created for HalloVine wine. That's me...color all the way!! The wine makes an excellent accompaniment for all your Halloween festivities. What a treat to see an actual wine for Halloween on the table!

Madonna Estate is a family owned and operated winery that has crafted fine wines for 87 years. The Bartolucci family has their origins in Italy, and today Andrea Bartolucci, his wife Susan, and their two daughters, Brette and Taylor are partners in the winery. They are the third oldest family still making wine in the Napa Valley. The daughters are the fourth generation family members to be involved in the winery. I also don't have to tell you, that Sue is an avid Halloween collector and very talented artist herself! You can see her wonderful art at TinsellandWhimsy.blogpost.com.

What sets the wines of Madonna Estate apart from other wines is that the grapes are organically grown in the Carneros District of Napa Valley, and they are dry-farmed. The dry farming makes the grapes smaller, but more intensely flavored because they have not been pumped up with water. The grounds are beautiful and the winery staff are so helpful and knowledgeable! They treated my eBay group, PFATT, to a spectacular tasting and tour last year.

Madonna Estate has a full service tasting room, where ten wine varietals may be tasted daily, with the exception of major holidays. The tasting room is open seven days a week from 10am until 5pm. The winery is located at 5400 Old Sonoma Rd. Napa, CA. the corner of Old Sonoma Rd, and Hwy 121. You do not need an appointment for tasting. Two picnic grounds are also available for your enjoyment. You may order your HalloVine wine at Tinsel and Treasure Art show, Sept. 12, at the Alamo Women's Club, Alamo, Calif. We won't be actually selling the bottles due to state laws. Ordering is easy though! I will be there and can sign a label, if you'd like. The wine will be shipped directly to you. You may also order it from the Madonna Estate website, or by visiting the winery. This wine is a must for all lovers of Halloween and wine.

I was given a bottle from last year and I just love having it out on our wet bar. Of course, I will have to drink it this year, but save the label. What a great collection that would be, right? Halloween wine labels?

Sneak Peeks for Tinsel and Treasures Art Show Sept. 12

Black and orange paint is splattered here and there, paint brushes sit in a cup of water, watercolor paint tubes are strewn here and there and all around are the beginnings of Halloween and Christmas art for Tinsel and Treasures Art Show, Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 am - 2 pm, at the Alamo Women's Club, in Alamo, CA. If you haven't heard about the show, head over to the website, TinselandTreasures.com, to see the 14 talented women who will be joining me for a day filled with fun and frolic! And don't forget to see the show blog, where you can read about the history of some of the artists and see the delicious art that will be available the day of the show, TinselandTreasures.typepad.com.

This year, Ulla Milbrath will be teaching four make and take sessions, each an hour long for $20 per session. You will get the chance to create one of two Halloween ornaments or one of two Christmas ornaments. Or, you can stay all day and make all four! They begin at 10 am and continue every hour, starting with the Halloween theme and then alternating to Christmas. If you don't have time to make it and take it, you can buy a kit and make it at home. Fall is in the Air

Oh my...where has the time gone? Summer is slipping away, I feel a nip in the air which means fall is just around the corner and I need to shift into high gear to prepare for my upcoming show Tinsel and Treasures, Sept. 12, for lots of Halloween and Christmas folk art.

And then, I'll be off to teach some special classes Sept. 26 & 27 in Southern California at Gilding the Lily with my friend and dollmaker Colleen Moody. (Details soon to be announced.) Next, I'll lead a Haunted Halloween Beeswax collage class Saturday, Oct. 3, in Walnut Creek, CA, as part of a one-day, two class event Mistresses of Macabre Part I with Daniela Costa, of The Art Life. Busy, busy, busy!!

So I keep on painting and creating. Just added a couple new original ACEO watercolors in my Etsy shop. Hope your summer has been grand!

Are You Afraid?

Inspiring Images

My husband and I recently went to Santa Cruz for the day. What an inspiring little beachside town, complete with a Coney Island-style theme park, Victorian mansions perched on cliffs overlooking the Pacific and lighthouses with intriguing histories.

As we drove along the cliff road, I spied many a home that I would love to incorporate into my pantings. This one has gorgeous, unobstructed views of the ocean. My imagination began to run wild with stories behind the mansion. It is ripe for a watercolor with maybe a ghost or two hiding inside.

Thankfully, my eyes were filled with all sorts of imagery and the camera clicked away for future use. For now, I have made one tiny abode available on eBay. It's another version of the mysterious pumpkin house. This one is a pen and watercolor collage.
